Manta Point is one of the best diving locations in Komodo National Park, East Nusa Tenggara. This destination is famous as a habitat for manta rays (Manta birostris). It is a species of giant stingray that is often seen swimming gracefully in the surrounding waters. The beauty of the underwater world and direct interaction with these extraordinary sea creatures make Manta Point a major attraction for divers and lovers of underwater life.
Habitat of Manta Rays
Manta Point is a gathering place for manta rays because the ocean currents bring plankton, their main food source. Manta rays often swim in groups with a circular motion while filtering plankton from the air. In addition, at this location there is a “cleaning station”, where small fish clean the bodies of manta rays from parasites.
In addition to manta rays, Manta Point is also home to various species of tropical fish, turtles, reef sharks, and sometimes dolphins. The coral reefs in these waters are very diverse, decorated with colorful anemones and various types of soft and hard corals.
The waters around Manta Point have good clarity with visibility reaching 10-30 meters, depending on the season. The ocean currents in this place are quite strong, making it an interesting challenge for experienced divers.
The best time to visit Manta Point is between April and November, when sea conditions are calmer and visibility is optimal. From December to March, tourists can still see manta rays, but sea conditions are more current and visibility is lower due to the rainy season.
From Labuan Bajo, tourists have several transportation options to Manta Point:
